Wood Windows Restoration

Here is the restoration process:

Full Restoration restores vintage windows to their original look and operation with improved energy efficiency. Restoration is done in our shop, where windows are completely stripped, repaired, sanded, reglazed and repainted to nearly new condition.

  1. Provide dust protection in the work area around the window unit as needed.
  2. Remove the upper sash, lower sash and window stops from the opening and haul to TMC Shop. Make the window opening secure during the restoration.
  3. Remove the existing weather stripping on the jambs and sills. Remove loose paint and caulk at the jambs and sills. The exterior millwork is not included in this proposal.
  4. Repair the existing exterior sill as required.
  5. Remove the existing parting stop. Fabricate and install new parting stop. Adjust parting stop size as required.
  6. Remove the existing pulleys and hardware. Remove the paint or finish and lubricate as required. The existing hardware is reinstalled unless otherwise specified.
  7. Using the steam stripping method, remove the existing putty, glass, paint or stain from the window sashes. Remove the paint from the existing window stops. The existing glass is set aside and cleaned before re-installation in the restored sashes.
  8. Clamp the existing joints tight and fasten with glue and dowels or screws. Sand all surfaces of the sashes until ready for decoration.
  9. Make repairs using epoxy or inlays as required. Trim or add onto the sashes to create a custom fit in the existing openings. Refit the existing glass. Broken glass is replaced as required.
  10. Prepare, prime and paint the exterior and interior of the sashes at TMC Shop prior to installation. Color and finish to match the existing unless otherwise specified.
  11. Prepare the sashes as required for weather stripping. Apply weather strip at the perimeter of the sashes and at the meeting rail.
  12. Reinstall the refurbished pulleys. Provide and install sash chains or ropes and hardware as required. Reinstall window sashes in the existing opening.
  13. Clean the work area and haul away the debris as required.
